Intro
Every prison sentence is measured in years. The real cost is never measured that way.
It's counted in funerals attended by phone call instead of in person. In children who no longer recognize your voice. In marriages that don't survive the silence, and friendships that fade because there's nothing left to say through a thick pane of glass. It's counted in the person you have to become just to make it to your release date.
This book is made of voices. Men and women who lived behind concrete and steel, who carry their own crimes, their own grief, and their own version of the truth. Some of them found God in a cell built for nothing. Some found a kind of clarity they'd never had room for on the outside. Some, by their own account, found out exactly what they were capable of and were sometimes scared of the answer.
Time moves strangely in there. A Saturday night talent show can feel like the realist hour of the year. A Sunday afternoon can end with a man you shared a cell with going cold before you even know he's gone. The outside world keeps moving the whole time, with or without you. Parents die before that one last call goes through, kids grow up on the other side of a visitation table, and the names of people you used to know start to slip.
But it isn't only loss. These pages also hold laughter — the kind that surprises you, that breaks out in a hot plumbing shop or over a half-remembered TV theme song turned prison anthem. They hold small kindnesses: a fan turned to face a sick friend, a teacher who actually showed up, a nickname that turns out to be a form of respect. People don't stop being people just because the state has taken their freedom. They joke. They argue. They build strange, specific cultures with their own language, their own unwritten rules, their own dignity. Some of that dignity gets handed back to them by the people running the place. A lot of it doesn't.
Prison strips away the noise of ordinary life and leaves people alone with themselves, often for the first time. For some, that's where transformation starts. A real look at the trauma that put them there and a willingness to take responsibility for it. For others, that same isolation becomes a trap, a place where any sign of softness is a liability, and the easiest way to survive is to harden into someone you don't recognize.
This isn't a book that glorifies what got anyone here, and it doesn't make excuses for it either. It's a collection of stories told plainly, by the people who lived them.
The absurd alongside the unbearable, the funny alongside the heartbreaking, because that's how it actually happens. This book is an attempt to look honestly at what incarceration costs, who pays for it, and what's left of a person once released.
